About Us
OLIGOMERIX Inc. is an early stage biotech company developing novel therapeutics and diagnostic assays for central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Drug discovery and development are based on targeting tau oligomers; a recently established and important target closely linked to disease progression in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative “tauopathies”. Market Opportunity There remains a major, growing, unmet medical need to develop drugs that halt or reverse neurodegenerative disorders such as AD and Parkinson’s disease. AD presently affects 18 million people worldwide and is expected to increase to 25 million by 2025. Direct costs of caring for people with AD in the US exceeded $150 billion in 2006. Current FDA approved medications, Cognex® (1993), Aricept® (1996), Exelon® (2000), Reminyl® (2001), and Namenda® (2003), treat AD symptoms, but do not reverse, halt, or slow disease progression. The current market of $4.6 billion for AD drugs (2006) is expected to double in the next 5 years based on the introduction of disease-modifying drugs which are expected to fuel 50% of the market growth. |
